Stablehand/Rider

We are on the hunt for an experienced Stable Hand/Rider to be based at our Carbine Lodge operation located at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne.

This position is full-time and responsible for the delivery of daily care, health and nutrition regimes for racehorses in training. This role involves routine track work riding and assisting with general stable operations such as; trot up’s, farrier and vet as well as general upkeep and cleaning activities. The successful candidate will also be required to conduct race day duties including pre and post-race activities. Previous experience is essential, as you may be required to ride both young horses and experienced racehorses on the training track.

Tasks include:

• Routine track work riding including pace work and gallops in accordance with instruction and provide feedback, including evaluating and reporting the performance.
• General day-to-day care of the horses including, mucking out, rugging, feeding and grooming.
• Routine health checks, monitoring basic health and welfare of horses, recognising signs of injury and / or signs of a healthy or unhealthy horse reporting concerns.
• Preparation of horses and gear and taking nominated horses to and from the races.

Essential:

• Confident experienced track rider, proven ability to consistently ride pace/timed work with a willingness and confidence riding and young horses.
• Practical understanding of horse health care and welfare requirements and measures, with prior work experience in providing direct daily care.
• Sound communication skills.
