Widden Stud Australia located in the Hunter Valley, NSW and in Riddells Creek, Victoria are currently seeking applicants for a full-time for the role of Veterinary Nurse/Technician.
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry best practice, with either international experience or a thorough understanding of the global trends of the thoroughbred industry.
Veterinary Nurse/Technician
Duties will include:
Assisting stud veterinarian in daily procedures and management of horses including:
1. Consult with external and internal veterinarians regarding the care and condition of mares and foals, walk-in mares and mares on the main farm
2. Consult with external and internal veterinarians and stud managers regarding the care and condition of horses in quarantine
3. Manage veterinary procedures with supervision
4. Oversee the daily care and supervision of bloodstock
5. Report on mares and foaling
6. Keep a foaling record of mares for veterinarians
7. Administer medical treatment to foals as well as attending to medical and health needs of mares as required
8. Manage and on-call (including nights) for complex foaling’s
9. Ensuring mare has milk and foals suckle for the first time and receive their colostrum
10. Providing pre and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
11. Overseeing daily care and supervision of breeding mares and foals
12. Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
13. Ensuring feeding and nutritional requirements of horses are met daily
14. Assist external and internal veterinarians regarding on farm surgeries
15. During the yearling season, train and prepare horses for major sales including teaching horses to be groomed and accept bridle, head collar, rug etc.
The salary will be above award – in the range of $75,000 to $85,000 per annum depending upon the skill set and level of responsibility.
Essential Skills:
All applicants must have a minimum of 3-years full time professional experience in the role or a relevant qualification and at least 2 years full time professional experience in the role.
