Description

Swettenham Stud is a successful thoroughbred stud located in Nagambie VIC currently accepting applicants for the full-time role of Horse Trainer/Breeding.

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry best practice, with either international experience or a thorough understanding of the global trends of the thoroughbred industry.

Horse Trainer/Breeding – Duties will include:

  • Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
  • Assisting Veterinarians with ultrasound/reproduction examination including assisting in birthing foals and administering medical treatment to foals
  • Training young stock for sale including yearlings and attending sales when required
  • Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
  • Assisting Veterinarians in attending to medical and health needs of horses as required

Essential Criteria

  1. A Certificate III or equivalent international qualification, or in the absence of a qualification a minimum of three years professional experience educating and training horses
  2. A minimum of at least five years’ experience handling and working with and educating thoroughbred horses
  3. Ability to take leadership of a team and work with management
  4. Knowledge and experience of horse training and handling methods specific to thoroughbreds, including stallions, sales or breeding
  5. Proven ability to train and educate young horses
  6. Oral and written communication skills of a level to provide information and advice to others and prepare reports
  7. Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
  8. Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of equipment relevant to the training and preparation of racehorses
  9. For the management positions the suitable applicant will require extensive evidence of managing a team and breeding operation

The salary will be above award – $75,000 to $82,000 per annum.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time position, with a minimum commitment of at least 2 years.
