The Opportunity
Tasracing’s Integrity Unit is seeking an experienced Chief Steward (Thoroughbred).
Position based in Hobart or Launceston (Tasmania).
The Chief Steward (Thoroughbred) is responsible to lead race day officials and ensure compliance with racing rules, legislation, and integrity standards across the Thoroughbred code.
This role plans, organises, directs, and coordinates stewarding operations, promotes adherence to regulatory frameworks, and manages investigations and inquiries to uphold fairness and Integrity in racing.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Lead, manage and support a team of race day officials (including Stewards, Clerk of Scales and Sampling Officials) to ensure the consistent delivery of best-practice racing operations.
- Chair race meetings and trials, conducting inquiries and hearings to ensure compliance with the Rules of Racing.
- Prepare and deliver timely, accurate and comprehensive Stewards’ Reports.
- Undertake inspections and investigations into racing, welfare and integrity matters.
- Monitor wagering activity and investigate irregularities as required to uphold industry integrity.
- Coordinate rostering for full-time and casual Stewards, including regional out-of-competition sampling operations.
- Develop and implement effective swabbing strategies, overseeing the collection, handling and dispatch of samples.
- Lead positive swab inquiries and represent Stewards in appeals before the Tasmanian Racing Appeals Board.
- Mentor, coach and support less experienced Stewards to build capability and ensure consistent regulatory decision-making.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to clubs, officials and industry participants on regulatory and compliance matters.
- Oversee administrative functions, including the maintenance of regulatory databases, steward records and race field information.
- Ensure accurate and efficient preparation and processing of documentation and data pre- and post-race meetings.
Base salary $130,000 + superannuation + vehicle.

About You
To succeed, you will have:
- Minimum 5 years experience chairing race meetings and managing stewarding services.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Rules of Racing and an understanding of the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness.
- Previous experience in the conduct of inquiries and investigations.
- Excellent race day observation and race reading skills.
- Ability to maintain the highest levels of integrity and confidentiality.
- Ability to interact with a diverse range of key personnel/stakeholders and participants from across the racing industry in a professional manner.
- Well-developed time management, self-management and organisational skills.
- Sound written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to consult and resolve conflict.
- Proven high levels of flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to deal with pressure, ambiguity and change.
