Assistant Trainer – Flemington

McEvoy Mitchell Racing is a leading Thoroughbred Racing stable, operating state-of-the-art facilities across Ballarat and Flemington.

We are seeking a full-time Assistant Trainer to join our Flemington stable in a key senior role. This position is suited to an experienced horseperson with strong stable management capability, excellent horsemanship, and the leadership skills to drive standards and performance within a team.

This is a hands-on role that combines daily operations, horse welfare, and staff management, with a strong focus on leading people and maintaining high stable standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily stable operations and morning routines
  • Lead, manage, and mentor stable staff and track riders
  • Prepare daily worklists and allocate riders via Prism
  • Monitor horse condition, training progress, and overall presentation
  • Administer and assist with veterinary treatments and medications in line with trainer and veterinary direction
  • Attend race meetings, trials, and jump-outs as a stable representative
  • Coordinate race day logistics, staffing, and transport
  • Maintain high standards of horse welfare, safety, and compliance
  • Support staff development, performance management, and team culture

About You

  • Proven experience managing within a racing stable environment
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team
  • Excellent horse handling and training knowledge
  • Sound knowledge of medication protocols, including withdrawal periods and compliance requirements
  • Experience administering treatments, including oral and IV medications, under appropriate direction
  • High attention to detail in horse care and stable presentation
  • Confident communicator with the ability to manage people and expectations
  • Certificate IV in Racing
  • Current driver’s license and licensing with Racing Victoria

This role requires early starts, weekend work, and flexibility around race days and stable demands.
