Coolmore Stud, located in the Hunter Valley of NSW, is seeking applications for the following full-time position:
Veterinary Technician/Foaling Specialist – Duties will include:
- Foal mares and administer medical treatment to foals as well as attending to medical and health needs of mares as required
- Manage complex foaling’s
- Ensuring mare has milk and foals suckle for the first time and receive their first colostrum
- Providing pre and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
- Ensuring feeding and nutritional requirements of horses are met daily
- Rearing and training of newborn foals
- Manage all laboratory technical requirements
- Coordinate and administer fluid therapy
- Coordinate and administer veterinary treatments and drugs
- Management of stock, ordering and controlling pharmacy and all associated reports and documents
- Run in-house lab tests & assist in x-ray, ultrasonic examination, urinary catheterisation & surgeries
- During the offseason Overseeing daily care and supervision of breeding mares and foals/weanlings
- From time to time preparing and parading yearlings and other bloodstock for sales
- Attending sales. Taking care of all aspects of the horse’s health and wellbeing at the sale to ensure they are properly cared for and made available for inspection by prospective purchasers
- Aiding veterinarians with educating horse and farm staff on veterinary and isolation protocols
- Responsible for overseeing vaccination and working protocols throughout the farm
- Assisting Veterinarians with pregnancy diagnosis and difficult calving’s with cattle
Essential Criteria
- A Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or higher qualification (including Veterinary Degree) or equivalent International qualification, or in the absence of a qualification a minimum of five years professional experience caring for breeding horses and associated youngstock
- Knowledge and experience of horse handling methods specific to thoroughbreds, including complex foaling cases
- Proven ability to work with neonatal cases
- Oral and written communication skills of a level to take instruction; provide information and advice to others and prepare medical reports
- Ability to work in a team and independently
- Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
- Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of equipment relevant to the training and preparation of racehorses
The salary for this position will be above award and based on your skills and experience in the range of $54,000 to $58,000. Accommodation may also be offered on the farm at Jerrys Plains NSW.
