Veterinary Nurse/Foaling Specialist
Cornerstone Stud Farm Pty Ltd, located in Angaston South Australia, is seeking applications for the following full-time position:
Veterinary Nurse/Foaling Specialist
Duties will include:
Assisting stud veterinarian in daily procedures and management of horses including:
- Foaling mares and administering medical treatment to foals as well as attending to medical and health needs of mares as required
- Managing and on-call (including nights) for complex foaling’s
- Ensuring mare has milk and foals suckle for the first time and receive their first colostrum
- Providing pre and post-natal care of broodmares and foals, including
- Ovary check
- Uterine flush
- Caslick procedure
- Retained Fetal Membrane management
- Uterine check post-foaling
- Naso-gastric tubing for oral treatment administration in both foals and adult patients
- Treatment of sick horses
- Intramuscular and intravenous injections
- Laboratory work – haematology, serum biochemistry, SAA analysis, IgG analysis, cytology, faecal analysis
- Responsible for overseeing aspects of breeding stock care
- Managing quarantine procedures in quarantine area
- Ensuring welfare of horses, mares and foals in the quarantine area
- Consulting with external and internal veterinarians regarding the care and condition of mares and foals in quarantine, walk-in mares and mares on the main farm
- Drenching horses when required
- Keeping all appropriate records on mares and foals
- Reporting issues with mares or foals, including lower limb problems to the appropriate professionals
During the yearling season you may be required to assist with the training and preparation of horses for sales including teaching horses to be groomed and accept bridle, head collar, rug etc.
You will also be responsible for attending continuing professional development as required, which will be reimbursed by the company.
Minimum skills, experience and qualifications required:
- Relevant Certificate IV or higher level qualification
- Proven experience handling and administering treatments to thoroughbred breeding horses
- Proven experience foaling mares and care of foals, including treating foals
- A minimum of at least three years’ professional full-time experience of equine practice
- Demonstrated understanding of biosecurity and quarantine procedures
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proven knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
- Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of veterinary equipment and equipment relevant to the breeding of horses
The salary for this position will be above award and based on your skills and experience in the range of $60,000 to $65,000.
