SPELLING MANAGER - KELVINSIDE

Godolphin is a world-class global thoroughbred breeding and racing operation with an impressive tally of 355 G1 wins in 14 countries since our inception. Our Darley Stallion roster for 2021 consists of 18 G1-winning stallions, standing at our Kelvinside property in New South Wales and Northwood Park in Victoria.

We have an exciting opportunity for a full time Spelling Manager based at our Kelvinside operation in Aberdeen, NSW. The Spelling Manager oversees the care and management of spelling yearlings and racehorses, racehorses in rehabilitation and horses for re-homing or sale. Working collaboratively with the Stud Manager, racing, breeding and farming departments, this role provides contemporary leadership, people management and collaboration for the successful achievement of organisational goals and business objectives such as veterinary reporting, data entry within our Horse Management System (HMS), assisting in the co-ordination of staff as well as potentially attending sales.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide contemporary leadership, supervision and management of staff including, leading by example, recruitment, regular communication and performance management.
  • Manage daily spelling operations and activities including feeding, cleaning stables/yards, rugging and general upkeep.
  • Responsible for the safe control and handling of horses as well as routine care and management of horse’s health and welfare.
  • Prepare and manage plans and schedules for; vet and farrier inspections, bloodstock inspections, treatments, in addition to planning and coordination of internal and external movements.
  • Responsible for the management of ill or injured horses.
  • Assist in the coordination of racehorse sale preparations.
  • Timely and accurate communication and recording of information about horse health, horse movements, spelling activities and events.

Criteria:

  • Experience in leading & managing an operational team and applying contemporary people management practices
  • Excellent horse husbandry and handling skills, with sound knowledge and practical experience handling and caring for thoroughbred racehorses and yearlings
  • Highly developed skills and knowledge in thoroughbred healthcare and welfare requirements and measures.
  • Understanding of and practical experience in applying safe systems of work and practices, including identifying, reporting risks and incidents
  • Current drivers licence with preparedness to work out of hours and weekends
