Laboratory/Veterinary Assistant

Kitchwin Hills is seeking a new team member to fulfil a unique role of veterinary/laboratory assistant and relief foaling attendant.

This position is an afternoon/early evening position ideally suited to someone wanting to develop their veterinary nursing skills.

The candidate will work closely with our resident vet on a thoroughbred stud based in the Upper Hunter NSW. The role will commence in early August 2021.

This role and would encompass.

• Laboratory duties such as running bloods and assisting the veterinarian with our mare breeding swabs.
• Patient treatments (including, IV, IM and catheter) and administration of IV fluids
• Assisting the resident veterinarian with various tasks and procedures
• Routine care and duties in our foaling unit as well as management of foaling down mares

The successful applicant will require the following:

• Demonstrate a high level of expertise with horse handling
• Experience of working in a veterinary lab would be of benefit but on the job training will be provided
• Candidate must be a self-starter, work efficiently with and without guidance and have a positive attitude
• Ability to perform a basic physical exam and initial triage of wounds and sick horses
• Thorough communication with veterinarians, stud staff and management
• Previous foaling experience highly desirable

Although this position is seasonal, there is an opportunity for full-time permanent employment at the end of the Breeding Season.
