Coolmore Stud, located in the Hunter Valley of NSW, is seeking applications for the following full-time, seasonal position:

Horse Trainer/Foaling

Duties for this position will include:

  1. Oversee the daily care and supervision of bloodstock
  2. Foal mares and administer medical treatment to foals as well as attending to medical and health needs of mares as required
  3. Report on mares and breeding
  4. Keep a reproductive record of mares for veterinarians
  5. Consult with external and internal veterinarians regarding the care and condition of horses, including in quarantine
  6. Training broodmares and foals to accept equipment used around the farm and in the breeding shed, including maiden mares
  7. Train and educate young stock as required
  8. Manage complex foaling’s
  9. Ensuring mare has milk and foals suckle for the first time and receive their first colostrum
  10. Providing pre and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
  11. Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
  12. Ensuring feeding and nutritional requirements of horses are met daily
  13. Rearing and training of newborn foals
  14. Coordinate and administer fluid therapy
  15. Coordinate and administer veterinary treatments and drugs
  16. Management of stock, ordering and controlling pharmacy and all associated reports and documents
  17. Aiding veterinarians with educating horse and farm staff on veterinary and isolation protocols

Essential Criteria

  1. A Certificate III or higher qualification or equivalent International qualification, or in the absence of a qualification a minimum of three years professional experience caring for breeding horses and associated youngstock
  2. Knowledge and experience of horse handling methods specific to thoroughbreds, including complex foaling cases
  3. Proven ability to work with neonatal cases
  4. Oral and written communication skills of a level to take instruction; provide information and advice to others and prepare medical reports
  5. Ability to work in a team and independently
  6. Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
  7. Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of equipment relevant to the training and preparation of racehorses
