The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) is recognised as one of the nation’s leading and most innovative thoroughbred racing clubs.

The Valley has delivered some of the most iconic moments in Australian racing history and is the home of Australia’s most prestigious race, the W.S. Cox Plate.  Over nearly a century, the W.S. Cox Plate honour roll features the greatest champions to have graced the turf, including Phar Lap, Tulloch, Dulcify, Kingston Town, Sunline, Northerly, Makybe Diva, So You Think and Winx.  It is renowned as The Race Where Legends Are Made’.

The Valley pioneered the introduction of night racing in 1998, and MVRC conducts 16 meetings under lights each season from September to March.  The course is famed for its intimate amphitheatre atmosphere, providing an immersive experience like no other course.

In 2017, MVRC announced the ‘Valley of Tomorrow’ project, this exciting project has been many years in the planning and will deliver a world leading racing, lifestyle and community precinct. The Racecourse precinct will feature world-class racing facilities, including a visionary new grandstand, a redesigned racetrack and other member and community amenities that will provide an unparalleled experience at one of the city’s most prized sporting destinations.

This spectacular transformation of The Valley precinct is one of Australia’s leading development projects.  Once completed, the MVRC will have set a new benchmark for thoroughbred racing not only in Australia, but across the world.

MVRC is offering a fantastic opportunity to join the team in the role of General Manager – Racing. Reporting to the Chief Executive and sitting on the Leadership Team, this role is responsible for the strategic and operational development of the Club’s racing and wagering offering. This role will ensure that racing remains our core product notwithstanding the activation of the of the Moonee Valley Park precinct.

As a key member of the Leadership Team, you will contribute to the overall strategy and success of the MVRC, including your departmental contribution and that of the Club overall. You will also play a key role in promoting and guiding strong cultural initiatives and employee engagement along with supporting innovation and change with the Leadership Team.  

Other key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop, implement and execute the long-term Strategic Plan for Racing
  • Construction of annual strategic plan and budget for Racing and Wagering. Particular focus is on delivering the racing to the highest possible standard and presenting an attractive wagering product and engaging with Industry participants.
  • Racing Sub-Committee – to work with the MVRC Racing Sub-Committee to develop strategy and deliver optimal racing related outcomes in line with the Club’s strategic goals.
  • Manage all racing related administrative activities including liaising with key industry stakeholders and participants.
  • Manage the Club’s international strategy for the Cox Plate Carnival and deliver international participation in the Cox Plate and Manikato Stakes in conjunction with Racing Victoria.
  • Position the Club as a market leader in the development and implementation of innovative and marketable racing related initiatives that will improve the MVRC racing product, increase wagering turnover, create commercial opportunities and enhance ‘The Valley Experience’ for Industry stakeholders and participants.

The role will suit an experienced Senior Racing Administrator with race programming, wagering and extensive business development experience to join one of Australia's most progressive and innovative Racing Clubs.

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following skills and experience:

  • At least five years relevant experience in a thoroughbred racing environment including racing administration, club management and or business development
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in business management and related disciplines
  • High level of negotiation, influencing and stakeholder management skills in order to positively and successfully achieve outcomes
  • Strong business development skills, industry networking and commercial acumen
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • A self-starter with highly developed time management skills, detail oriented and ready to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective use of systems including CRM platforms and the Microsoft Office suite, especially PowerPoint, Excel and Word

You must be prepared to work outside the spread of normal hours when required and at all race meetings. Knowledge of the horse racing industry or club environment is preferred for this role.
