Yulong Stud, one of the leading Thoroughbred breeding operations in Victoria and based near Nagambie, is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Dry Mare Manager.
Reporting to the Stud Manager the successful applicant will be responsible for the overall care of Yulong’s Dry mares. This involves working closely with the Stud Manager and the Broodmare Manager to organise the daily husbandry, feeding, organising and recording of veterinary and farrier work, as well as other associated day-to-day activities of the dry mares leading up to and during the breeding season. Activities will include but not be limited to;
- Monitoring the overall condition of the dry mares and adjusting feed accordingly
- Organising and keeping records of all farrier work/ vaccinations and drenches for dry mares.
- Maintaining health records as required by Yulong management
- Training maiden broodmares to accept equipment used in the breeding barn and training staff to correctly handle these mares safely
- Preparing broodmares for cover
- Reporting medical conditions to Yulong management and working closely with the Vet
- Working with the reproductive Vet and keeping reproductive records for all vet work around covers
- Efficiently manage a small dynamic team of staff including on-going training with best practice methods
To be successful in this role you will need to have:
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to work within a team environment
- Ability to liaise with management and fellow workers.
- Ability to administer medications (intravenous and intramuscular injections, oral medications, fluid therapy) to all stock under veterinary care.
- Ability to change bandages and maintain progress notes to communicate with treating Veterinarians.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of broodmare management and horse handling skills.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Willingness to work unsocial hours during the breeding season.
- Experience training maiden broodmares to accept any equipment needed in the breeding barn.
- Experience training staff in handling maiden and difficult mares.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to manage a small team of staff, including training new staff.
To be considered for this position, you must have at least 4 years experience in a similar role, being responsible for more than 100 mares due to foal down.
