  • Spelling, Breaking-In and Pre-Training Services
  • Racehorse Rehabilitation & Re-Education Services

At KRD Racing, our objective is to build the formula for success in one of the most challenging of Industries. To achieve this end, we have aligned ourselves with a tight knit family group (5th Generation) and like minded trainers that have strong strike rates and a proven track record of Group 1 success in Australia & New Zealand. Their approach is different to the Typical Australian trainer (in my opinion), with an emphasis first and foremost on animal welfare, coupled with the best feed and; an emphasis on strong education, supported by time and carefully considered athlete management principles and strategies. Ultimately, this serves to ensure a happy horse that can work to its full potential and is afforded every opportunity to succeed, whilst ensuring longevity.

Coupled with this approach, is the strategic sourcing of animal talent through our network of trusted horse professionals (Stud Masters, Trainers, Breeders, Agents etc.) across both sides of the Tasman; supported by the in-depth evaluation and analysis of blood lines (a passion); knowledge of proven racing families and identification of emerging and/or potential new families, predominantly linked to the broodmare and sire of the broodmare.  One of the keys to our formula is to focus on new and emerging sires, with an emphasis on staying capability, athleticism and power. The other key ingredient in this formula is the broodmare. We target un-raced proven mares, maiden and/or young mares by proven broodmare sires (i.e. broodmares by sires that cross well and leave strong performing progeny consistently), those with emerging pedigrees and; those with strong track performance by proven broodmare sires; which is typically an indicator that you will achieve success with progeny, the only question is, to what level?

Then there are the physical dimensions of the animal i.e. conformance (body structure, size, scope, movement etc.), their nature or personality often referred to as their "eye" and "mindset", which is important to ensure you have an animal that wants to be a racehorse and has the right attitude to be trained.  In support of the physical attributes of the animal, examinations such as endoscopic evaluation (airway & lung function), x-rays (knee, fetlock, pastern etc.) and analysis of blood, all serve to identify if there are any potential features that may impact on their ability to handle the rigours of training and/or to perform at a competitive level.

Whilst our business is in its early years of development – we take great pride in our achievements to date, given that we have built our portfolio of talent without the significant outlay compared to that of the established and major players.

A key dimension to our strategy is the procurement of affordable talent both locally and in New Zealand. Horses in New Zealand will be broken in, trained and will race or trial locally to ensure their capability prior to relocating to Australia. Horses will be based in Sydney out of our Warwick Farm operation, with an emphasis on developing City Class performers, who can race in both directions and; have access to good prize money and incentives.

The initial phase of our plan has been executed with a bulging pipeline of serious talent and we have now embarked on the training journey with both Shaune Ritchie (Cambridge, NZ) & Craig Ritchie (Warwick Farm, AUS) taking into work the first of our two and three year olds, including several of Shamoline Warrior's and Shocking's progeny.

We are aiming to be the first to attain "Black Type" racing success with the progeny of "The Warrior", to raise the profile of the Champion status he so richly deserved, coupled with further aspirations of attaining success at Group level.

Other emerging sires represented in our portfolio include: "Animal Kingdom", "So You Think", "Smart Missile", "Proisir", "Makfi", "Lope de Vega", "Poet's Voice", "Jimmy Choux", "Shocking", "Rebel Raider", "Swiss Ace", "Helmet" and "Pluck". Proven and seasoned Stallions include: "Sebring", "Snitzel", "Savabeel", "Street Cry", "I Am Invincible", "Stratum", "Pins", "O'Reilly", "Street Sense", "Commands", "Nicconi", "Alamosa", "Husson", "No Excuse Needed", "Bushranger", "Conatus", "Nadeem" and "Congrats". Combine these with our current crop of foals and you include "Bullet Train" (three quarter brother to Frankel), "Toorak Toff", "Fighting Sun" (the fastest son of Northern Meteor) and "He's Remarkable" rounding out our portfolio of talent.

In conjunction with our sourcing and racing strategy, we have continued to develop our breeding operations in New Zealand, with our Dehere Mare "Eaudechloe" producing the high profile "Leebavas" by Savabeel and serviced by our Hall of Fame Champion – “Shamoline Warrior”. She is from a strong family in demand (Countess Chloe), with La Zuma and Chloe Anna performing well in Australia. Our Irish Sensation "Goolagong" by Giant's Causeway, is in foal to Shamoline Warrior again, having produced a cracking colt by him, as well as two stunning fillies to Shocking (2010 Melbourne Cup Winner) which have impressed our trainer with their development and early ability.

A further nine broodmares consisting of one by O'Reilly "Spanish Melody", Kashani (Danzig) "Mylor" and Van Nistellrooy (Deputy Governor) "Shezabella", all have progeny that are getting the job done on the track internationally. Other mares by Savabeel, Shamoline Warrior, Mossman, Starcraft and Conatus are laying a strong foundation to ensure the ongoing success of our breeding program, which continues to diversify and develop utilising a combination of our core stallions and targeted freshman sires.

In Australia, our breeding operation is also underway, with three young, well credentialed broodmares. "La Comedienne" by Commands (half sister to Black Type performer - Lancet) and "Lucite" (by Stratum), who is the half sister to NZ Stakes winner Travino,  was an impressive trial winner prior to injuring herself and; "Flying Pins" by Pins, an un-raced mare from the family of "Sacred Kingdom" are all in Foal to boom new sire "Fighting Sun".

With the opportunity to develop potentially new families of performers, we are optimistic and excited that our breeding pipeline is positioned well for the future. Exciting new "speed" stallions have been targeted to compliment our broodmares in both New Zealand and Australia, enabling our local team to be competitive over the shorter distances and complimenting our bulging portfolio of "Stayers".

With thirty three active racehorses currently in our ranks and another seventeen yearlings (rising two year old's); the coming 2016/2017 season will be the culmination of a lot of planning, patience and hard work and one we believe will firmly plant KRD Racing as an emerging force in the industry.  Our pipeline of talent will continue to develop with eight weanlings on the ground this year and a new line of progeny to be produced over the coming months, with all fourteen broodmares in foal; ensuring we are well on our way to fulfilling our strategy of producing the "New" world class Australasian Stayer. Add to this what we consider to be some seriously talented racehorses and; we firmly believe we can achieve Group 1 success within the first 5 years of operating.

Leading New Zealand trainer Shaune Ritchie is at the helm to nurture and develop our team of horses from Cambridge in New Zealand, whilst brother Craig, the same in Australia from Warwick Farm in Sydney. Legendary trainer and father to Shaune & Craig, Frank Ritchie - of Bonecrusher fame; is also involved to provide support and guidance to the team as needed. Shaune & Craig are impressed with the quality of our horses and we are now looking forward to realising their potential on the track.

Complimenting our business, KRD Racing has been approved by the "Lead Regulator"; Racing Victoria and ASIC, as an Authorised Representative who can legally promote shares in Racehorses. KRD Racing is passionate about offering new participants to the industry a more rewarding "involved" experience and affording much higher levels of investment protection, compared with the traditional syndicators. KRD Racing will only offer "Selected" horse options for syndication or targeted horses of interest from our portfolio to prospective buyers.

Overall, this is an exciting journey for the business as we look to develop the next generation of staying champions and raise our own profile through the use of these strong blood lines and; non-conformance with the standard industry approach; proving you don't have to be a king to make an impact. Our intention is to develop, race and build the progeny that creates a new dominant "Bloodline" in the region to take on the world’s best.
